Kitchener firm's fireplace screens protect children from burns

Peter Nigh

First, Peter Nigh developed a fireplace screen to protect children from severe burns.

Then the Kitchener entrepreneur discovered that childhood burns caused by gas fireplaces are a big problem. Now he's trying to develop a market for his protective screens for what Nigh says has become “an epidemic of childhood burns.”

“I invented the product. Then I found out about the problem,” he says.

“I don't have a market because people don't know of the danger,” says Nigh, who co-owns W-D Metalcraft, which produces custom-made fireplace doors at its Bridge Street East location.

Gas fireplace glass doors can reach a temperature of more than 20°C in six minutes, hot enough to cause third-degree burns, says Safe Kids Canada, a injury prevention program run by The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. It takes 45 minutes for the fireplace to cool to a safe temperature once the fire is switched off.

Joshi Fireplace Screen

Joshi Fireplace Screen

Did you know that the glass covering a gas or electiric fireplace can reach a temperature of between 200->315°C (or 400->600°F) in about six minutes? That sort of temperature gives 3rd degree burns almost instantaneously, your children and family are at risk every time you turn on that fireplace you love so much.

The Joshi fireplace screen was designed and is built with child safety in mind. Designed and manufactored in Canada exclusively by W-D Metalcraft, the Joshi Fireplace Safety Screen can be custom made to fit any natural gas or electric fireplace. The Joshi puts a safe barrier between the very hot fireplace front glass and your young children. The screen is made from coated chain mesh that provides a lot of surface area allowing it to stay much cooler than the fireplace doors and remaining safe to touch*.

This screen features:

Protect Your Child from Gas Fireplace Burns

Sick Kids

Gas fireplaces are perfect for keeping you and your family warm throughout the winter, but can pose a risk for severe burns to young children and infants.

Gas fireplace glass can reach a temperature of 200°C, hot enough to cause a third-degree burn, even after the fireplace has been turned off. After being turned off, the glass remains hot for at least 45 minutes. The easiest way to prevent burns is to keep the fireplace off when young children are around; if this isn't an option, you could install a screen or hearth gate.

How hot is too hot? Believe it or not there is no agreed upon standard, however the following table gleaned from here provides the following glimpse:

Hot Surface Skin Contact
MOST PROBABLE SKIN TEMPERATURE
EFFECT or SENSATION
212°Fsecond-degree burn with 15- (boiling water)
second contact
180°F second-degree burn with 30- second contact
160°F second-degree burn with 60- second contact
140°F pain; tissue damage (burns)
120°F pain; "burning heat"
